Bywater's War 2012 Standard

In 1925, naval analyst and former spy Hector C. Bywater wrote what today would be called a “techno-thriller.” His novel described a hypothetical conflict between Japan and the USA, set in his near future, 1931. His background in naval tactics, ship design, and history made him the perfect person to write the story, which was wildly popular. In addition to being well-written and exciting, he described many advances in naval technology, such as the rise of naval aviation. But his story was also rooted in the past, and included the use of poison gas, and concluded with a Jutland-style clash between the two battle fleets.

Bob Eldridge, a long time naval miniature wargamer, who is also familiar with both the history and technology of the 1920s and 1930s has transformed Bywater’s novel into scenarios for Command at Sea. The ship statistics include not only real-world units like the pre-war US and Japanese battleships, but also the ships that Mr. Bywater created for the story - the Alaska-class aircraft carriers and the Nagasaki-class supersubmarine.

In addition to Mr. Bywater’s story, Bob Eldridge has included scenarios for another three campaigns, each taking place at a different time between the wars - 1926, 1932, and 1939, each triggered by a different historical event. These also feature a mix of real-world and hypothetical units, like the US Lexington class, which were laid down as battlecruisers until the Washington Naval Treaty.

Altogether, the 136-page booklet includes 30 scenarios in four separate campaigns, and is accompanied by rules for using airships and chemical weapons, since gas bombs and shells were used in Bywater's story. Statistics are provided for US and Japanese ships and aircraft extant in the 1920s and ‘30s, as well as the hypothetical units.

This is not a separate game. It is a supplement designed to be used with the Command at Sea 4th edition miniatures rules, also published by the Admiralty Trilogy Group.

Bywater's War has been updated to use the 2012 Standard, an improved formula to calculate a ship’s damage points. Please make sure that all ships on both sides in a scenario are using either the older 2006 Standard, or the new 2012 Standard.

You can buy miniatures from http://www.shapeways.com/shops/objects?s=96&section=Seaships+1%3A2400#more-products all the ones with Bywater in the title are for this game and then fill the rest in with ww2 models or a few other real ships that were broken up like Amagi, as a battlecruiser or the South Dakota class with 18 inch guns. Afrodi does them in 1/3000 also

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
