Selected Option:

Tactical AI for skirmish miniature wargames.

Hostile Tactical AI is an Artificial Intelligence system to order enemy units around in skirmish miniature wargames, so you may play solo or co-op against the enemy.

The rules work through a deck of 72 cards that tell enemy units, where to go and what to do. There are two sets of instructions on every card. One set gives orders to patrolling units unaware of the player. The other set of orders is for aware units attacking the player's units.

Patrol instructions include: Sweeping the area for the player, Patrolling objectives, Checking suspicious behavior, etc...

Attack instructions include: Rushing the player, Defensive posturing, Flanking, etc...

Each card includes: Compass directions, Dice rolls, Player to attack, and Reactions. There are also playing card symbols on each card to be used for variable activations or objective orders in the case of multiple objectives.

Included with the deck and rulebook are sixteen shards matching the playing card symbols. These can be used for random setup of enemy units.

The rules were specifically designed for miniature games with ranged weapons.

For each enemy activation, the player draws a card for that enemy unit. The card gives the enemy order or orders. Sometimes requiring multiple cards to be drawn to show what direction and how far the enemy moves, and also which player to attack.

Hostile Tactical AI is quick to learn and gives you a good fight. The enemy might just surprise you!

I like premium presentation paper matte, and then sleeve them within a standard deck of cards for thickness.

Cards + PDF includes the printed deck of cards with the PDF files, so you have both.

Will you be providing card fronts and backs in a single file, so it can be printed directly? I'm quite concerned about the alignment if I have to print the fronts, turn the paper and print the backs

Looks very interesting and I'm looking to purchase mainly because of the Memoir '44 variant which would help me get this to the table. I was wonder if this could also be used with something like Black Powder. It's a traditional miniatures game (no board no hex movement) and is based on ranged combat (though there is bayonet charges also).

I haven't played Black Powder. The base design of Hostile is for miniatures games. Mostly skirmish with ranged weapons. In the standard rules there are cards that declare charges. The Attack orders give you a range of how far the minis move and which direction, towards flanks, towards enemies, and objectives. Hope that helps.

Thanks Josh. Purchased and printed the cards so far. Not sure I'll print the shards only because of the red background would kill my printer. Thanks for putting this together. Going to give Memoir '44 a shot this weekend while putting together proxies for Black Powder (don't currently have any minis yet).

I downloaded the cards, but I have 2 questions:
1. what is the best "turn" mode between the player units and the IA units (1/1 or 2/2?)
2. what are the actions for the player unit? move+attack?
Thank you!

1. I like to use an activation system like FNG or Chain Reaction. The units are activated by their level. So the highest level units for one side with initiative goes first, then all the other player's units of that rank go. Then all the next lower ranked units for player 1 go, etc...

2. In Attack mode, the units will move first and then always attempt to attack.

For Hostile Attacks the units will even move out of cover to attack. While defensive moves, the AI will prefer to stay in cover and attack.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

The AI cards are mostly designed for warfare with ranged weapons. Hiding behind cover, rushing to strike, flanking, etc... But those movements could be used in medieval warfare.

The rules are very open to many combat types. The activated AI units are guided towards objectives, players, and places. So the time period doesn't change them too much.

A Reaction order can be added to each order. Reaction orders include: Rally, Charge, Suppress, Double Time, and Help! By adding those to the movement orders, you could generate orders for melee and ranged attacks in the medieval period.

Hi Josh,
So, if I order the printed cards, do I also need the watermarked PDF? In other words, does the PDF include the rules or something? Thanks in advance.

Pa-lease, Josh! Combine those card images into a 9 card-per-page pdf! (with borders on the cards to allow cutting!) Don't expect the customer to do this work for you with paid content.
To make matters more of a hassle: the WGV downloader only allows 10 items per download, and those 10 items in this case are always the same 10 cards - 11 to 16 (a bug), so you have to click and save each individual card...

Looks really really good and I'm looking forward to giving this a try. But are all the required image files there? The description says there are 72 cards, but there are only 40 card images, 36 with the "_-_Copy" file suffix and 4 with the "_-_b" suffix. I'm guessing that either there should only be 36 images, which are printed twice to make up the 72 deck, or we're missing 32 images.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
